What is Tamiflu?

Tamiflu is an antiviral drug that prevents the effects of type A and type B influenza viruses in the body.

Tamiflu is used to treat flu symptoms caused by the flu virus in people with symptoms less than two days old. This drug can also be administered to prevent influenza in people who may be exposed but do not yet have symptoms.

Tamiflu should not be used in place of the annual flu vaccination. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends an annual flu vaccine to protect you from new flu virus strains each year.

Warning.

Tamiflu is used to treat symptoms of influenza caused by the influenza virus in patients with symptoms less than 2 days old. It can also be administered to prevent exposure to the flu, but not yet symptoms. This medication does not cure the common cold.

Before taking Tamiflu, tell your doctor if you have received a nasal vaccine against the flu within the past 2 weeks, or if you have kidney disease, heart disease, lung disease, or any other serious illness or health problem. Also tell your doctor if you have edema or any condition that causes brain damage.

Take Tamiflu for as many days as you are prescribed, even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may begin to improve before the infection is fully treated.

Some people using oseltamivir have had rare side effects, including sudden confusion, delirium, hallucinations, unusual behavior, or self-harm. These symptoms occur more frequently in children. Before taking this medicine

Do not use Tamiflu if you are allergic to Oseltamivir.

Do not use Tamiflu to treat flu symptoms in children younger than 2 weeks. Children as young as 1 year old can prevent flu symptoms by using this medicine.

Tell your doctor if you had

• Kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis),
• Heart disease or chronic lung disease,
• edema or conditions that cause brain damage,
• Weak immune system (caused by illness or use of certain medications),
• Genetic intolerance to fructose - or
• Use of Flamist nasal vaccine within the past 2 weeks.

It is not known whether this drug can harm the fetus. However, influenza disease during pregnancy can cause genetic abnormalities, low birth weight, premature birth or fatal complications. Your doctor will determine if you should receive oseltamivir if you are pregnant.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that pregnant women can receive an annual flu vaccine to prevent influenza. Oseltamivir should not be used in place of the annual flu vaccine.

It is not known if Tamiflu passes through breast milk or if it can harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding your baby.

How do I obtain Tamiflu?

Get Tamiflu exactly as your doctor prescribed you. Follow all instructions on the prescription label and read all drivers or sheets that use the drug. Use the medication exactly as directed.

Start taking Tamiflu as soon as possible after flu symptoms such as fever, chills, muscle aches, sore throat, runny or blocked nose.

Take the capsule with a glass of water.

Shake the drinking suspension (liquid) before measuring the dose. Use the dosing syringe provided or use a dosage measuring device (not a kitchen spoon).

If you have stomach problems, Tamiflu can be taken with food.

To treat flu symptoms: take Tamiflu every 12 hours for 5 days.

To prevent flu symptoms: take Tamiflu every 24 hours for 10 days or as prescribed. Follow your doctor's instructions.

Read and carefully follow any instructions for use provided with your medicine. If you do not understand these instructions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Use this medication for the entire prescription period, even if your symptoms improve immediately. Tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or worsen.

Keep capsules at room temperature away from humidity and heat.

Store liquid medication in the refrigerator, but do not freeze; toss unused liquid after 17 days.

Liquid may also be stored at cool room temperature for up to 10 days

Use the medication as soon as possible, but skip the missed dose if the next dose is required within 2 hours. Do not use two doses at the same time.

Do not use nasal flu shot (FluMist) within 48 hours of taking Tamiflu. Oseltamivir may interfere with the action of FluMist and reduce the effectiveness of the vaccine. Follow your doctor's instructions.

Tamiflu Side Effects

Seek emergency medical care if you have signs of an allergic reaction to Tamiflu (hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat) or a severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat, burning eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash (blistering or peeling).

Some people (especially children) using Tamiflu may experience sudden, unusual changes in mood or behavior. It is not certain whether oseltamivir is the exact cause of these symptoms. Anyone with influenza can develop neurologic and behavioral symptoms even without the use of oseltamivir. A person using this medication should consult a physician immediately if he or she experiences any of the following
